Fresh Frozen Hawaiian ʻAwa is fresh kava root, exactly as it comes out of the ground. Instead of being sun-dried and milled into powder, the root is cleaned, ground and frozen right after harvest. You taste the plant the way island kava bars serve it: earthy, peppery and noticeably smoother than dried kava. Think of fresh frozen ‘awa as the champagne of kava.
Fresh root pulp gives up its kavalactones readily in water, so a short knead makes a rich, full bodied shell. Because fresh root has never been dried, you’ll use several times more by weight than you would with powder. That’s normal; it’s what keeps the flavor delicious and the effects pronounced.

Grown on our own farm on the northern coast of Hawaiʻi Island, it makes a smoother, brighter-tasting shell than dried kava. Great for anyone who wants to drink ʻawa the traditional Hawaiian way. Shipped frozen straight from the farm, freshness is guaranteed.
How to Prepare
- Thaw. Move the portion you need to the fridge overnight, or seal it and set it in cool water for about an hour.
- Measure. Add a gallon of fresh 'awa to a strainer bag for every gallon of cool water.
- Knead. Submerge the bag and knead for a few minutes, until the water turns thick and milky brown.
- Squeeze and serve. Wring out the bag, stir, and drink it fresh. A slice of pineapple or mango makes a classic chaser.
Storage and Shipping: Ships only on Mondays and Tuesdays, frozen in an insulated box. Put it in the freezer as soon as it arrives. Frozen, it keeps up to two years; once thawed, refrigerate and use within three days. Thaw only what you plan to drink.
