Each island in the South Pacific Ocean has its own special connection to kava, from kava ceremonies to the unique kava variety grown there. Samoan kava is notably special because it is grown in incredibly small quantities. This scarcity often makes it difficult to acquire commercially. But we’ve partnered with kava farmers in Samoa to harvest a variety that is just like its island: one-of-a-kind. We love to share our passion for the Pacific Islands and their kavas, so explore the joys of Samoa and their kava with us—bula!
Kava in Samoa
Samoa, named the “Cradle of Polynesia”, is located in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean, just a short jaunt away from Tonga and Fiji. It consists of nine islands, some of which are uninhabited. Samoa is, overall, very rocky, as they were formed by volcanic activity over millions of years. Samoa’s rich volcanic soils support a range of lush vegetation, including kava.
As we mentioned before, kava from Samoa is very special because of the limited amount. Samoan “ava” kava comes from islands where kava production is sparse or select kava varieties are only grown in small quantities. This can make it tricky to access commercially, so few get to experience Samoan kava, its fantastic taste, and its singular relaxation effects.
Kava Ceremony Samoa
Samoan kava, or ava, has been integral to the island’s culture for centuries. Ava ceremonies in Samoa were (and still are) solemn rituals conducted for ceremonial, religious, and formal events. Before the ceremony, the drink was prepared in a kava bowl or tanoa, a highly-decorated wooden bowl. Then the kava was served in a special cup made out of half a coconut shell. The highest-ranking person in the kava ceremony would get to drink the kava first, then it was passed throughout the group in descending order based on rank.
