Kava in Vanuatu
Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, Vanuatu is the ancestral home of kava. Its highly diverse land—ranging from rolling hills to rugged mountains to sandy shores—lends to the diversity of kava that is able to grow on the island. Over 80 varieties of kava, or Piper methysticum, are grown in Vanuatu, and they have been part of the long and rich history of kava culture on the island. These unique kava varieties are enjoyed as a beverage in kava bars called nakamals. On the island, the locals drink kava for social relaxation, and it’s as common as people in the USA drinking a glass of wine or beer with friends. Those in Vanuatu have many names for kava, but the most popular are malok, molok, and malogu.
For centuries, those in Vanuatu have drunk kava for a variety of reasons including medicinal purposes, conflict resolution, special occasions, weddings, births, anniversaries, and funerals. Notably, kava ceremonies had deep religious and ceremonial significance for villagers, such as the installation of a new village chief. Kava is prepared as a beverage in a kava bowl, known as a tanoa in Fiji. Those participating in a kava ceremony are served kava in a coconut cup (called a bilo in Fiji), and the kava is served in descending order by rank. The Chief or the highest-ranking individual in the group receives kava first.
Borongoru Kava Effects & Qualities
Borongoru is the heaviest kava we carry in our shop both in micronized and medium grind form. Heavy kavas predominately make your body feel heavy (hence their name), relax your muscles, and calm your mind. Heavy kavas are also more sedative than balanced or heady kavas, so they may be great to use as natural sleep aids. Many people enjoy sipping on Borongoru kava at the end of a long day, typically in the late afternoon before dinner or a few hours after dinner when their stomach is empty. Kava community members have reported the following effects after drinking our Borongoru kava:
- Mellowed emotions
- Mental calm
- Muscle and body relaxation
- Eased mental and physical anxiety
- Calmed worries
- Drowsiness to help drift off to sleep
- Natural sedation
