What is Kava Root?
Otherwise known as Piper Methysticum, kava is a small shrub grown in the Pacific Islands, such as Fiji, Hawaii, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The history of kava is incredibly rich. As This plant has been used on the islands for centuries for rituals, religious ceremonies, medicinal purposes, and social relaxation in kava bars. More recently, the rest of the world has discovered what those in the Pacific Islands have known for hundreds of years: drinking kava can help you relax, unwind, and feel at peace. When the root and stump of the kava plant are ground down, made into a drink, and consumed, the effects of kava’s active ingredients—kavalactones— help promote psychological and physiological relaxation.
Kavalactones are the active ingredient responsible for kava’s calming qualities. Concentrated in kava’s rootstock and roots, there are thought to be 18 different kavalactones. Six of these kavalactones are thought to be responsible for over 90 percent of the active natural ingredients in the plant. Kavalactones interact with the body’s limbic system, which is the section of the brain most associated with regulating emotions. When kava is consumed, it produces a psychoactive, sedating effect that is conducive to relaxation.
Each kava variety has different effects, including muscle relaxation, natural stress relief, elevated mood, gentle sedation to support sleep, and euphoria. While kava does impact the brain, it typically does not negatively affect cognitive functioning like alcohol, and it is not addictive like nicotine or kratom, making it excellent for relaxation and natural anxiety relief.
Types of Kava Root Products & Preparation
While kava natural relaxation drinks are the most popular kava products, this incredible plant comes in a wide range of forms. We specialize in a range of kava products to fit your relaxation needs, tastes, and lifestyle preferences.
Medium Grind Kava Root – Medium grind kava root powder, the most common form of kava root powder on the market, is similar to medium ground coffee in its particle size. Medium grind powder root is usually prepared two ways: the traditional way and the easy way.
The traditional way is often compared to brewing tea. You place medium grind kava root powder in a straining bag, then steep it in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes. After steeping, you then knead and squeeze the strainer bag to strain the liquid out of the bag into the bowl. When you’re finished kneading and squeezing, chill your kava in the refrigerator or add some ice before drinking.
For easy kava preparation, simply add medium grind kava and hot water into a blender. Blend on high for 4 minutes, empty and strain through a cloth strainer, then chill before drinking.
Micronized Kava Root – Micronized, or finely ground, kava has much smaller particle sizes than medium grind kava root, as all the fibers have been removed from the granules. Micronized kava can easily be added to the beverage of your choice and stirred in for a quick, easy drink. Simply add one tablespoon of micronized kava to 4-8 ounces of the drink of your choice.
Kava Concentrate – Kava concentrate is great for those who are trying kava for the first time or who are not used to the earthy taste of kava. Kava concentrate is a kava extract mixed with delicious tasting flavors for a tasty, relaxing kava experience. Just dilute 1 oz. of kava concentrate with 5 oz of water to make a quick, tasty kava drink.
Instant Kava – Instant kava is a finely ground, powdered form of kava created by dehydrating fresh green kava juice. Instant kava is known for its incredibly smooth mouthfeel because the woody fibers of the kava plant are strained out during the juicing process before the liquid is dehydrated. To make instant kava, simply add 1/2 Tablespoon of instant kava to any nonalcoholic beverage of your choice. Chill your kava drink or add ice and enjoy!
Kava Varieties
There are estimated to be over 100 varieties of the kava plant, and each variety has a different composition of the primary six kavalactones. Each variety provides totally unique relaxation effects. Some are more uplifting and great for daytime drinking, and we call these “heady” varieties. Other varieties are better for nighttime drinking and great as a natural sleep aid, which we call “heavy” varieties. Fittingly, “balanced” varieties are a balance between heady and heavy kava varieties.
